DRIVER #18 // CARLIN
How big is your family?
My family in Brazil is considered quite big. The family I lived with is only four people because my parents are divorced. I lived with my mother and my sister, and my grandmother came up as well. But I left home five years ago so I’m living alone now!
If you were an animal which one would it be?
I don’t know, I’ve never thought about that…! Oh yeah, I really like dogs, but I like watching the National Geographic channel and there’s many beautiful animals on there so I don’t know which one I like the most. I think the biggest friend of man is the dog, so I’ll go for the dog.
What’s your favourite pastime?
Whenever I have free time, I like to play video games, I really enjoy it. I’m not so much of a sports guy, but I like my training and speaking to my family. When it’s off-season, in Brazil I like to party with my friends or take a family trip.
Who would play you in a biopic about your life?
Like, an actor? Oh I’m horrible with actors, if someone says “there’s that movie with this actor and this director” I’m like “well I saw the movie, I don’t know the names of the actors”! I don’t know an actor who looks like me.
What was your best subject at school?
I think history, geography, all this stuff.
Tell us one thing nobody knows about you…
I think when I was younger, I stole some ice cream from a hotel with some friends [laughs]? I think that’s the wildest thing I’ve ever done…and I would like to apologise for it!
What’s your strangest talent or dinner-party trick?
I don’t have any weird talent, I can’t fold an arm or touch my nose with my tongue. My knees can rotate a lot and I can take my shoulder off, but I think a lot of people can do the shoulder one!
Favourite person to follow on Twitter/Instagram?
I think [Daniel] Ricciardo is really fun. When he did the raps…I don’t know how he had the courage to post these sorts of things. I think he’s quite a fun guy to follow. Also, some food pages, the recipe ones…
What is the worst thing you’ve ever heard over the radio?
“Shut up and drive!” That was in Monaco – that was okay really, it was probably like some bad news like “you have to do a drive through” or “you got a penalty”, and then the radio’s not working and you don’t get a reply. You think it’s the biggest injustice in the world, you’re hot-blooded at the time…so that sort of thing.
Favourite moment of a race?
I think the safety car starts are always interesting. Pitstops…I think in a place like Bahrain where there’s high deg, the pitstops are the coolest part of the race. We saw last year Artem, he was in a good position and then he did two laps more on the prime set. It just gave him all that extra pace on the option set.
Name three things that your engineer keeps telling to do?
I don’t know, I don’t like a lot of radio. Last year with MP [Motorsport] towards the end of the year, it was really good: I’d get updated with everything, pace, advice. Not anything complex like temperature, but the basics…
What’s your usual reaction to “let’s take a group selfie?”
I like it, especially if you’re on a trip somewhere.
Have you ever been on your own Wikipedia page?
Yes! Once, I put my name in Google so I could find a picture, and clicked my Wikipedia page. And I was like “who made this, why is it here?” I don’t know. It’s cool that I have it, I never expected it.
What’s the weirdest dream you’ve ever had?
I have so many dreams, it’s crazy. I remember once I dreamed I was on an aeroplane and a guy asked to switch seats with me. I got up to the front of the plane because there was a problem with my ticket, and all of a sudden I was out of the plane! That was probably the weirdest one, and I was walking around the airport afterwards, and obviously I couldn’t get back in!
Where do you keep your trophies?
My father keeps them. This year with Carlin, they want to have them as well! But yeah, my father keeps them and he’s really proud to have them. He’s the first one who supported me, so he takes them and I’m happy with that.
