#7 // JACK AITKEN
#8 // GEORGE RUSSELL
Describe your teammate in one word.
Jack Aitken: Tall!
George Russell: [Pauses] Short.
Jack: I’m not that short!
George: Compared to me! Not compared to the average, but to me…
Jack: I’m shorter than average, I’ll accept that.
George: No, short isn’t nice…shorter.
If your teammate was a superhero, who would they be?
Jack: Green Lantern.
George: I don’t know who that is…
F2: Is that the first one that popped into your head?
Jack: Not the first one, no. Obviously from my in-depth knowledge about superhero comics…I watch the movies, but I can’t think of anything else that fits George’s profile.
George: I really can’t think of any, to be honest. I’m really struggling…
Jack: Can I answer for myself? Superman. Actually, The Flash. [Whispers to George] Say “The Flash”…
George: The Flash.
Jack: The Flash, because I’m quick.
George: The Flash, because Jack asked me to say that!
If you could steal one quality from your teammate, which one would it be?
Jack: His height!
George: I honestly would want to swap!
Jack: Well if we average out, we’re probably the perfect height…
George: If I could give Jack a couple of inches, and I could lose a couple of inches, we’d be in the middle.
Jack: Inch perfect.
F2: So height is a quality for you guys?
George: In racing, it’s a quality for Jack. In life, it’s a quality for me!
Jack: That’s accurate.
What does your teammate do that annoys you the most?
George: Ooh. How do we answer this without being disrespectful? Maybe when I get outqualified…
Jack: That’s the easy one, when he goes faster than me.
George: But that’s a bit boring, isn’t it? You don’t tidy very often, do you Jack?
Jack: No, I don’t…
George: I usually leave the track later than Jack, like on the last day of testing, and for whatever reason Jack’s helmet, suits and gloves are just all over the place.
Jack: Sometimes, it’s not great.
George: Someone else has to clean it up, I don’t do it.
Jack: Nobody cleans it up, it’s just in a pile when I get there the next time. Something that George does…he usually has a slower warm-up lap than me, so when I’m behind him he holds me up and gets in the way. It’s just driver preference isn’t it – I like to get it done and start on my quali lap; George takes a bit more time and care.
George: That’s a good one, actually…what annoys me is that I go out ahead of Jack and get overtaken on my warm-up laps!
Who needs the longest warm-up before jumping in the car?
Jack: You reckon?
George: Mine is literally three minutes long.
Jack: Mine’s more five minutes…
George: We’re both fairly short, to be honest.
Jack: Yeah, some drivers are out there for half an hour in their suit, they’ve got their helmets on doing jumping jacks – we’re pretty quick.
Who talks the most at the briefings?
George: Yeah, me. I talk the most…
At which concert would you take your teammate to?
George: I don’t really know what music you’re into, to be honest…
Jack: I’ve got no idea…
George: I can imagine you’re into something like old-school jazz or something!
Jack: I don’t know about jazz [laughs]! You were on the right track until you said jazz.
F2: Stuff like 80’s classics?
Jack: Yeah, even noughties classics these days. Pop bangers. Dunno about you, probably a more modern taste?
George: I’m not, you know. I quite like those sorts of tunes as well.
Jack: I guess we’ll just take each other to the same concert then.
George: Exactly, yeah!
Jack: We’ll go to…a Busted reunion. How about that?
George: I think Busted is a little bit too far…
Jack: Anything from that period, I’m down.
Who is the most active on social media?
George: Jack [Are you sure?] Yes.
Jack: Yeah, probably.
F2: Well, Jack does more Instagram Stories…
George: Yeah I’m pretty poor with Stories.
Jack: Recently I’ve been slacking…but yeah, it’s all about that candid pic.
George: Yeah, you’re right.
Jack: Living his best life for Instagram.
George: I think that, and maybe it’s true for Jack as well, we’re both so busy with our racing lifestyle that there’s not really much more going on away from the track! And when I’m away from the track, I prefer just to put my phone away and chill with my girlfriend, family or whatever.
Who has the most success with the ladies?
Jack: Well, we both have girlfriends, so I think it’s a draw isn’t it?
What’s the one place (country, restaurant, club,…) you’d recommend your teammate to go to on their spare time?
George: I personally like northern Italy, like Lake Como. I went there last year, which was nice.
Jack: I’ve been to Milan, so we’ve got that base covered.
George: I actually went to Barbados with my girlfriend. That wasn’t a planned holiday, it was very last minute – we were there for some media, and I was allowed to take her with me! I mean, it did mean downgrading from business class to economy, but –
Jack: – the things you do for love… [laughs]
George: I know! Barbados, yeah? It’s very romantic…
Jack: …but if it’s only economy, that won’t go down with me. Only first class [laughs]!
George: Thing is, this is being written up so it’s going to sound like we’re being serious!
Jack: I’ve always thought doing a road trip across America. I’ve never done myself, so George, you could be the guinea pig. I recommend you do it.
George: When I was at Lake Como, I did a road trip from the Netherlands. I went through Switzerland, stopped in Lugano, stopped at Lucerne on the way back! These are just holiday ideas for you, aren’t they?
What’s the best advice you have for your teammate for this season?
George: Don’t beat me.
Jack: Turn 1 is flat.
George: Best advice…there’s no “I” in “team”.
Jack: But there is a “me”.
George: I thought you were intelligent…
Jack: There’s a “t”! Get your cuppas in…
George: You’ve gone down in my estimations…
Jack: Yeah, but you have to have the letters next to each other – I’m branching out. Flexibility of the mind! So yeah, turn 1 is flat…
George: There’s me giving serious advice…
Jack: Take it as a compliment, I’m saying you’re good to go!
