DRIVER #8 // ART GRAND PRIX
How big is your family?
My family is average size, I’ve got a brother and sister who are both older than me – they’re in their thirties, and my brother has two kids so I’ve got a nephew and a niece. There’s also my parents, who come to every race with me.
If you were an animal which one would it be?
I would be a crocodile, purely because I’m scared of them. So if I was a crocodile, there’d be nothing to be scared of!
What’s your favourite pastime?
I don’t have much of a life outside of racing, it takes up a lot of my time! And with my job at Mercedes, doing simulator work, it’s all pretty much racing, racing, racing! I’d probably say spending time with family, girlfriend and friends, because I don’t get to see them much.
Who would play you in a biopic about your life?
That’s a very difficult question to answer! I enjoy watching movies, but I don’t have a massive knowledge of actors…I can’t answer it!
What was your best subject at school?
Maths! [Alex Albon butts in: “Are you sure you even went to school?”] He can’t talk at all! But yeah, maths – I was never great with my school reports, but maths was always one where I was almost top of the class.
Tell us one thing nobody knows about you…
I’m struggling! I’m quite an open person, I don’t have many secrets…
What’s your strangest talent or dinner-party trick?
You’re asking some difficult questions here! I’m not a very talented guy in that sense…I’m quite average to good in general sports, but I don’t have a very strange talent. These questions are impossible! [laughs]
Favourite person to follow on Twitter/Instagram?
I think Jack’s crew of WTF1 are quite a funny bunch of people to watch and it’s quite nice to have some F1 humour sometimes!
What’s the worst thing you’ve ever heard over the radio?
It’s this: “good job, you’re missing three tenths in sector one, two tenths in sector two, and two tenths in sector three.” I think I responded to that with “how is that a good job?” – that’s one of the worst things I’ve heard over the radio!
Favourite moment of a race?
I think it’s dependent on your performance and the general strategy, really. If you’re in Markelov’s position from Austria, for example, and you’re on the alternative strategy and that much quicker than everyone else, it’s extremely fun to carve through the pack. But I’d probably say the starts, really, it’s the biggest opportunity to win some positions.
Name something that your engineer keeps telling you to do?
My engineer and I have a very good relationship, we’ve worked together for two years and he’s got a very good idea of the things I like to know. But it’s usually something like “look after the tyres”…
What’s your usual reaction to “let’s take a group selfie?”
I’m all for it! I’m not a massive fan of solo selfies, but if it’s in a group I’m up for it!
Have you ever been on your own Wikipedia page?
Yes, I have! Funny story: once, I was at Alex Albon’s house and we found out that we could edit people’s Wikipedia pages. It started off editing our own because there were a few incorrect facts, and then we thought it would be fun to add incorrect facts to other pages! I think they all got deleted after about half an hour…
What’s the weirdest dream you’ve ever had?
Dreams are one of those things that you remember vividly straight away, and then it goes away. I had a dream last night, woke up and thought about it, but then it was gone! I dream a lot about racing, it’s not very weird…
Where do you keep your trophies?
That’s a question for ART! I haven’t had a single trophy from the past two years – it’s not like we have a deal or anything where I give them the trophies, but they end up going in the truck back to the factory and get forgotten about. At my parents’ house there’s a line of trophies on the floor on the way to my room, but when I’ve got a bit more time on my hands it’d be nice to have a cupboard or something for them.
