DRIVER #3 // PERTAMINA PREMA THEODORE RACING
Self-proclaimed sneaker-head Sean Gelael unlaces his helmet design.
Generally, I’ve always wanted to do something different design-wise, last year I had graffiti because when I grew up I always liked that image in hip-hop, and I’ve always been inspired by Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali as well. This year, I wanted a different side, mainly just to beat Artem (Markelov) in the helmet stakes! Because I like that kind of lifestyle, it’s a sneaker design. I love Nikes and Air Jordans, and what was really hype this year was the Nike collab with Off-White. It’s a bit inspired by that, and by the AJ1s too which were iconic.
I think the shoelaces add a cool accent to it as well, with the Jagonya Ayam sponsorship too. It’s the tagline of KFC Indonesia back home.
The colours fit really nicely with the colours of Indonesia, so it represented that and it felt really nice to get that into the helmet and represent some patriotism! It works with the AJ1 design, which is part of my history when I was growing up. It’s also a design for Indonesia, my home ground. Having the matte effect also looks a lot cooler with the shoe design.
It’s there to represent Jakarta, there’s a football club out there called Persija Jakarta, and their fanbase is called “The Jak”. So, “Jakman” fits, it’s because I was born and raised there. The number 021 is the area code of south Jakarta where I was brought up. It’s got a lot of history to it.
